Bill Clint and Huckabee in Atlanta to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

During the heat of Presidential elections, Bill Clinton and Mike Huckabee make appearances in Atlanta for the annual day of remembrance for Martin Luther King Jr.
Today’s main event will be held at Mr. King’s church, Ebenezer Baptist Church at 407 Auburn Avenue. The keynote speaker for the 2008 Commemorative Service is Dr. Vashti McKenzie, Bishop, Payne Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the first woman elected Bishop in the A.M.E. Church.
There will also be a 12’ x 19’ “JumboTron,” — a new feature of Commemorative Service — positioned in front of the Martin Luther King Historic Site Rose Garden for visitors in the Historic District. The Commemorative Service is open to the public, but limited seating is available in Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary.
Most events of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Observance are free of charge.
And on a personal note….
As a native to Atlanta, it was news to me that not every state honors Martin Luther King Jr. day by taking the day off. I guess being in Atlanta it’s nearly impossible to not know of the man’s legacy, and it not be a major part of the history of this city. I recently visited the MLK center and very much enjoyed my experience. The center is composed of a large museum, an outdoor commemorative pool with the grave of MLK Jr. and his wife placed in the center, and entrance to the original Ebenezer Baptist Church where continual taped preaching of MLK Jr. is played. There are also tours to the home he was born in offered. This is also free but there is a limited number of tickets distributed per tour.
It took me twenty-six years of living in the city before I stopped by the center, but I highly encourage schools and residents to visit this venue.
